Kriya yoga in scripture

Being a yoga practitioner, inculcate our knowledge in the field of yoga is vital for better understanding. I’m interested to share a note about one of the famous Indian Sage Patanjali, who synthesised and organised knowledge about yoga from older traditions, the yoga Sutras were compiled prior to 400 CE by Sage Patanjali.

The yoga Sutras of Patanjali are a collection of 196 Indian Sutras on the theory and practice of yoga. The Yoga Sutras are a condensation of two different traditions, namely ‘Eight Limb Yoga’ and ‘Kriya Yoga’. Patanjali divided his yoga Sutras into four chapters called Samadhi Pada, Sadhana Pada, Vibhuti Pada and Kaivalya Pada.

The ‘Kriya Yoga’ is contained in chapter 1, chapter 2: sutra 1-27, chapter 3: except sutra 3 & 54 and chapter 4. The ‘Eight Limb Yoga’ is described in chapter 2: sutra 28-55 and chapter 3: sutra 3 & 54. For further reading : www.swamij.com/yoga-sutras-list.htm
